The clouds should finally clear by Monday afternoon, making way for mostly sunny conditions for this week and next, Rob Sharpe, a meteorologist with Weatherzone, said.

"We're going to be looking for some pretty dry weather for some time," Mr Sharpe said. Tuesday's "going to be a pretty great day to go to the beach, if you've got the day off".

On current forecasts, Tuesday can expect a top of 26 degrees with light north-westerly winds clearing away any early morning fog. Ocean temperatures are about 20 degrees, for those taking a dip.

The next five days are all expected to be sunny for Sydney, with each day expecting a top of 21 degrees and most mornings cooling to just 11 degrees.

"We'll have cool mornings and sunny days for about two weeks," Mr Sharpe said. "It's a massive change."

Sydney received rain on 23 days in April, the highest count since 1923. It was also the city's wettest month for any time of the year since June 2007.

The city collected 5.7 hours of daily sunshine last month, about 70 minutes less than average.

May has also started damp, with 69mm of rain in the first four days, or more than half the month's average.

Blowing away the clouds will be a series of cold fronts, including one that will bring potentially damaging winds across southern states and even parts of southern NSW, Mr Sharpe said.

Unlike the set-ups that helped spawn two big east coast lows and a big hailstorm over Sydney, however, this fortnight the upper-level cold air masses should remain in sync with surface-level fronts, he said.

It was the combination of upper level cold air combining with warmer, moist lower-level air over the Tasman that created the powerful lows.

These systems generated cyclonic-strength winds and dumped more than 300mm of rain over parts of the NSW central coast and southern Queensland, leading to floods and deaths in both states.
