Despite the dirt road, corrugations, steep hills and really really steep hills, seven culvert crossings and the promise of a less than attractive pit toilet, four hardy people turned up for our ride and camp over at Quartpot, at the backwaters of Wyangala Dam.

We were delighted to welcome Karen Carter, our South West NSW Regional Manager (ATHRA) who joined us for the weekend.
After lunch we headed out on horseback; the terrain around the water is fairly flat but very rocky in places, the view across the water was lovely and we came across a mob of feral goats and saw many water skiers and folks out fishing and camping.
Then we proceeded to the lookout, access was along a road that was steep, but the horses handled it well, with all saddles and riders staying in place and the view from the top was worth the effort, it felt like we were on top of the world.
Then it was back down the road to the campsite where horses were fed and watered and owners enjoyed a drink and dinner around the campfire and tried to count the numbers of kangaroos keeping them company.
The next day we were joined by two more members and we set out on our horses mid morning along the road that we had driven in on.
Shortly we came to a fire trail that led across country to another road heading to a popular camping spot known as Gerties.
After checking that our saddle girths were tight we headed up the hill above Gerties, and up and up.
Following the ridge line we were once more able to enjoy spectacular views for most of the ride and see our floats parked way down in the distance.
We rode down to the edge of the dam and gave the horses a well earned drink, then back to the floats for lunch.
Because of the difficult access to the area whilst towing a float with a horse or two on board we all agreed this ride probably won't be repeated but it was a lot of fun once we were there and the views were just amazing.
The next ride will be on Sunday, April 26 near Koorawatha, please phone Dave Fermor on 0459420954 or 63421306 (nights) if you are attending, or comment on the Facebook page.
The next meeting of the Cowra and District Trail Horse Riders Club will be held on Tuesday June 1 at the Cowra Services Club commencing at 7.30 pm (dinner at 6.30).
