The speaker at last week’s meeting was Vivienne Wells who was the Cowra NYSF Student this year.
The National Youth Science Forum (NSYF) is a two-week program for students who have just completed year 11, and who are thinking about a career in science, engineering or technology. The forum is fully residential and takes place every January at the Australian National University where all facilities are provided for 12 days. Vivienne told the members present at the meeting of her experiences at the two week forum in Canberra.
The NYSF students were transported by bus to Canberra with the Brisbane students passing through Cowra where lunch was supplied to them by Rotary. For the 12 days at the forum the students stayed at Burgmann College which is a university residential community affiliated with the Australian National University and is situated on its campus. This gave her a taste of what university life was like. The opening ceremony was held at parliament house. During the time at NYSF, the NYSF students made numerous lab visits where they saw the application of science such as 3D printing as well as attended debates and forums. They had the chance to talk to and ask questions of eminent scientists and researchers. They were separated into various interest groups and Vivienne was in the Physics/Space group. Other visits were Mount Stromlo observatory and the super computer at ANU.
The students gained valuable insight into the people in science. They were encouraged at all times to ask questions and during the forum learnt life skills. Vivienne thanked Rotary for their assistance in helping her attend the forum.
