Each year a number of local students, sometimes as many as 20, attend the Outward Bound programme in Canberra and without fail report on the wonderful time they enjoy. What they also report on is the many skills they learn at this course including how to work as part of a team to achieve a desired result. By attending this Outward Bound each student is given the chance to further improve their social and work skills while in an environment which encourages individual as well as group advancement under the management of trained supervisors.
The students engage in many activities which are both fun and educational such as a ropes course to abseil a rock wall (where teamwork is a vital component), raft building (more teamwork), how to set up a bivouac tent for themselves, camp cooking not only for themselves but for others, and trekking up and down quite challenging mountain and forest paths. This encourages a level of fitness of body as well as the mental acuity for the team tasks, thus being of an educational value I that most important area, life skills and the ability to survive in the world.
The students also make good friends and meet others from different backgrounds during the week or so that they are away and this builds their self-confidence and social skills.
Cowra Rotary have been supporting St Raphael's students especially for quite a few years in this endeavour and are pleased to be once again able to support the students of Cowra in this very worthwhile endeavour.
Last week's guest speaker Ian McColl proved to be very popular with his views on the sheep meats trade. The questions at the end of his talk showed the level of interest which he managed to elicit from the assembly. Speakers of the quality of Ian McColl continue to entertain as well as educate the Rotarians and are much appreciated by the members.
