Dr Alexander Cameron-Smith, who is a roughly described as a medical historian, gained both a Bachelor of Arts with first Class Honours in History and Philosophy and Bachelor of Science majoring in Advanced Biology.
Alexander's interest in the study of tropical diseases led to the thesis "Strange Bodies and Familiar Spaces: W.J.R.Simpson and the threat of disease in Calcutta and the Tropical City 1880-1910".
His PhD. was conferred in 2011 with his thesis " Doctor Across Borders: Raphael Cilento and Public Health from Empire to the United Nations."
Alexander's interests lie in Colonial and tropical medicine, Australian history, international organisations, public, social and post colonial health, health and rights and history and philosophy of Science.
His address will be centred on the life and times of Sir Raphael Cilento, whose work in tropical medicine and health had benefits for the entire pacific region. Sir Raphael advocated diet and nutrition in Australia amongst parents, schools and governments in the 1930s and engaged with the League of Nations and debates about public health in Europe and the USA.
This promises to be a most interesting insight into a man whose ideas are still echoed in health debates today.
The cost of the evening will be $45 and dinner numbers are required by August 8. The event will kick off from 6.30pm for a 7pm start at the Japanese Garden, with tickets available from Marianne Payten on 63426716 or Anne Holloway on 63451819.
