Zone 5 championships
The final zone event for the time being, the fours, were played at Campbelltown City last weekend - and finally there is some good news for the Cowra bowlers.
Noel Hubber, Luke Nobes, Russel Nobes and Gerard Beath had a bye in the first round and then defeated John Frame, Trevor Schram, Mark Sheppard and Brian Judge (Lithgow Workies) 20-17 in a semi-final on Saturday afternoon.
In the final on Sunday morning they played the Blacktown City side of Leslie Serle, Kevin Perrett, Wayne Moore and Matt Slager and always had their nose in front, going on to take the 2013 Zone 5 Fours Championship 24-14 - without playing the last end.
Noel, Luke, Russ and Gerard are now into the last 16 teams in the state and will contest the play-offs at Maitland in October.
President's Day
Last Sunday 22 teams were on the Cowra greens to celebrate Terry Peterswald's President's Day.
We were pleased to welcome visiting teams from Millthorpe, Orange Ex-Services Country Club, Boorowa Ex-Services, Young, Caragabal, Grenfell, Gooloogong, Woodstock and Lachlan Valley vice-president Roger Traves' team from Canowindra (who also represented the Lachlan Valley).
During the official part of the proceedings Terry was pleased to ask Roger to present merit badges to Ron Cooper and Dave O'Donnell and tie bars to Brian Duff and 'Tiger' Brown.
The convincing winners for the day Joe Burgin, Garry Lea and Les Tysoe and the runners-up (on a count back) were Ray McLeish, Steve Treasure and Bruce Holland - it is good to see Ray back on the greens.
The lucky winners of the 100 Club were Cliff Traynor (Young) first and Norm Egan second.
Club Championships
There was one semi-final of the mixed pairs played last Saturday between Helen Winwood-Smith and Ken Porter against Jill Turnbull and Ralph Morgan.
It was a close game throughout and after ten ends Helen and Ken had there noses in front at 11-10.
Jill and Ralph picked up ten shots to four over the next six ends to lead 20-15, but Helen and Ken came home with a rush, winning the last five ends to take the match 22-20.
The match between Robyn Oliver and Norm Egan against Judy Nobes and Gerard Beath has been arranged for today, weather permitting, while the match between Jill Turnbull and Ralph Morgan against Helen Winwood-Smith and Ken Porter will be played as soon as the four of them can organise it.
State Pennant play-offs
This weekend our No 1 pennant side travels to Merimbula/Tura Beach to contest the State No 1 Pennant Finals.
They will play their sectional matches at Tura Beach and will meet (in order) Tathra Beach, Warilla and Alexandria/Erskineville.
The final will be played at the Merimbula Imlay club on Monday morning.
Our side is Noel Hubber, Alan Messiter, Nev Connor and Graham Amery; John Penyu, Luke Nobes, Charlie Bryant and Gerard Beath; Bernie Coghlan, Col Crowe, Col Neilsen and Russ Nobes with Mike Nobes reserve and Terry Peterswald manager - the best of luck to them all.
Grenfell will also have a side contesting the State finals in grade 2 and will be playing at Nelson Bay.
Toyota Pairs Tournament
We still need a lot more entries for the Ron Hattenfels (Cowra Toyota) sponsored 'B' & 'C' grade (or minor) pairs tournament.
Entry sheets are on the noticeboard and the first 32 teams only will be accepted, with the first round to be played on Sunday August 11.
If we do not get enough entries at this time the tournament will be deferred and listed for a later date.
Handicap Pairs
Entries are also being taken for the handicap pairs championship and will close on August 10.
Vouchers
Recent voucher winners have been Stan Walker, Tony McLean and Fred Flint on 24/7 and Robert Gee and Garry Lea on 27/7.
Bowls Report for next week.
Please note that there will be no bowls report in the 'Guardian' next Wednesday August 7 but there will be one on Friday August 9.
