Indonesian Shadow Puppetry workshops marking the Cowra breakout's 70th anniversary and the Festival of International Understanding's 50th year are continuing this week and will culminate in a short performance in the Council shop-front on the corner of Kendal and Macquarie Street at 6.30pm.
Indonesian-Australian artist, Jumaadi has been leading the shadow puppetry courses, teaching all ages, from young local children to a 70-year-old how to hand make shadow characters.
Friday night's show will reveal the work completed over the week and tell the lesser know story of the 500 Javanese and Indonesians civilians interned at Cowra in the 1940's.
"It's a lesser known story than the Cowra Breakout but just as important," Jumaadi said.
Lawrance Ryan from the Cowra Musical & Dramatic Society said the story is particularly significant in the lead up to next year's Festival of International Understanding, where those involved in the Shadow Puppetry course will help present the results.
"The whole idea is because next year is such a big year for us, the breakout association is looking to tell a story that the Japanese weren't the only ones there, Indonesian and Italian families were in exile there too," he said.
"It's done in a way that the children can understand too."
Jumaadi's Shadow Theatre courses continue Wednesday 10, 11 and 12 June from 10 till 4pm at the Council shop front on the corner of Kendal and Macquarie Street, with all welcome.
