Top players cue up for Trophy

27 Nov, 2009 10:37 AM
On Wednesday, November 18, the Cowra Snooker Club held its Annual General Meeting with Robbie Byrne once again being re-elected to the top spot as president.

Paul Ryan is vice-president, Shayne Dawes secretary, Paul Ryan treasurer and Alan Messiter publicity officer.

The general committee is comprised of Peter Verzi, Don Gillespie, Daniel Core, Shayne Dawes, Paul Ryan, Wendy Ryan, David Ryan, Mark Rush, Robbie Byrne and Robin Harvey.

Our next meeting will be on December 2.

Next year all meetings shall be the first Wednesday of every month starting at 6.30pm.

Snooker last Friday was sponsored by the Cowra Services Club as it was our President’s Trophy night and contested for by no less than 50 players showing the popularity of our president and the pick-your-own-partner format.

Unfortunately for Robbie and his partner Ian Core they went down to T Rowston and Col Crowe 37-18, who in turn were defeated by our first finalists Rob and Jono Gee 44-16.

They then accounted for Di Spring and Col Miller in a close match 46-40, before having a big 50-27 win over Daniel and Geoff Core to reach the final.

In the top half of the draw the two favourites were to do battle in Billy Dawes and Mark Rush up against Shayne Dawes and Tony Dowd. Billy and Mark came off second best 48-11.

Next to go by the wayside were David Ryan and Ray Salisbury 49-30.

Then after receiving a 23-point start with only eight reds, Wayne Lancaster and Richard Kelly were no match for Shayne and Tony going down 59-33.

Paul Ryan and Phil Andrews were their only hurdle for a finals berth. Shayne and Tony duly made no mistakes taking the hard-fought match 57-25.

The final, unfortunately, was a bit one-sided with the Gee combination of father and son receiving a 45-point start over a full frame.

But they weren’t able to capitalise as Shayne and Tony ran away with the night’s play 88-64.

Sunday, November 22, snooker was once again a good roll-up with 25 players striving to become our Sunday champion for another week.

The first player into the semi-finals was Robbie Byrne with wins over Allan Harris (50-28), Trevor Pullen (41-25) and then Wendy Ryan (55-33).

Next came Ralph James accounting for Col Crowe in a black ball decider 44-38, then Bob Holdsworth 55-34 before a good win over Di Spring 50-36.

Ralph then left Robbie to collect the semi prize money as he advanced to the final by an unregistered score.

In the bottom half of the draw Ed McMahon topped Wayne Lancaster and Shane Lauritzen to advance to the semi-finals.

His opponent was Tom Goricki who had impressive wins against Paul Ryan (54-47) and Rob Gee (38-26).

He conceded 15 points to Ed and had little trouble with a 47-22 outcome leaving just one game for the day’s play remaining.

Ralph was on a 24 handicap and Tom on 12 over a full frame and the result showed the handicaps are working with the final result being 57-56 Tom’s way.

What a great finale to a great weekend of snooker.

To finish my first report for some time all I can say is if we keep getting roll-ups to our competitions and tournaments like this, snooker in Cowra is for the long term going to remain very strong indeed.

Thanks to all involved and may the board have a successful year.
