North Brisbane Junior Motorcycle Club hosted the 2010 Senior/Junior Longtrack championships at Mick Doohan Raceway on August 7 and 8.
Cowra Motorcycle Racing Club Members, Ben and Zach Cook, Jack and Joe Dawes, Larz and Kye Burke, Toby and Kelsey Pollard, Izzak Ticehurst, Matt Gilmore, Joe Bugg, Brayden Elloitt and Thomas Duggan all competed in their respective
classes with some great results
overall.
Kelsey Pollard was the lone Cowra rider to contest the 65cc 7-u9 year’s division which was held over seven rounds.
With some smart riding Kelsey showed great competitive spirit and with every outing nudged closer to the front runners, well done Kelsey.
The older 65cc 9-u13 year’s
division had Zach Cook and Matt Gilmore competing against 17 other riders to gain a place in the top 12 to go on and progress to a three round final.
Through elimination heats both boys qualified convincingly.
Zach was a very worthy winner of the Championship taking twp wins and a second place over local favourite Zaine Kennedy and Ayr rider Corey Briant finishing in third position.
Matt Gilmore rode hard chasing the pack and finished in fifth place overall, great effort guys.
Next to face the starter in the 85cc 2 str/150cc 4 str 9-u11yrs had a packed Cowra grid with Toby Pollard, Matt Gilmore, Zach Cook, and Joe Dawes.
With 16 other competitors,
progressing to the finals was no easy task.
After some hard drawn heats and some clever riding, both Toby and Joe were unable to continue through for a chance at the title. Great effort boys keep pushing forward.
Again with some exciting riding both Matt and Zach progressed through for a chance at the title. Matt found his older competitors a little too strong but proved he can mix it with the best.
It was Zach who again triumphed over the more favoured local riders North Brisbanes Reece Yunker and Maryborough hot shot Bailey Jung, giving Zach a double for the weekend.
Thomas Duggan, Ben Cook and Jack Dawes lined up to contest the 85cc 2 str/150cc 4 str 11-u13yrs class, being run over seven rounds all three boys showed great determination, Jack and Ben swapping blows with local rider Zaine Kennedy, but with his sheer class Ben took out the championship ahead of Jack with Kennedy in third place.
Thomas was unlucky to not gain a place on the podium coming in fourth place. The 85cc 2 str/150cc 4 str 11-u13yrs big wheels class had three Cowra riders Thomas Duggan, Ben Cook and Jack Dawes, with this event also being run over seven rounds, every point counted for the overall championship. Local rider Zaine Kennedy showed early speed and form, taking four wins from four starts on Saturday, it was Jack and Ben left fighting for the minor
placing’s with both boys swapping wins on Sunday.
Ben got the upper hand to finish in second place, Jack in third and Thomas coming home in sixth
position overall.
The older 85cc 13-u16yrs big wheels class saw Kye burke line up to fly the flag for Cowra.
After some first class riding Kye looked good for the crown but due to mechanical failure he was unable to compete for the weekend.
The 80cc 4 str 7-u10yrs Matt Gilmore backed up again with Kelsey Pollard and eight other riders for a chance to be crowned 2010 Qld champion.
Both boys challenged the field over the seven rounds.
Matt falling only a few points short of a place on the podium and Kelsey showed his fighting spirit at every opportunity.
The 80cc 4 str 10-u14yrs had brothers Jack & Joe Dawes competing against each other, both boys tussled with the local riders with Jack taking out second place in the title.
Joe put in some great performance but was unable to join Jack on the podium finishing in fifth place. The 100cc-150cc 2 str 13-u16yrs was
represented by Tumut based Cowra rider Brayden Elliott who fought hard over the four qualifying rounds to seal a place in the three finals.
Brayden finished in fifth position overall.
‘The premier Junior class being the the 250cc 4 str 13-u16yrs division was hotly contested by four Cowra riders Izzak Ticehurst, Larz Burke, Joe bugg and Brayden Elliott, with 23 riders entered in this division, it was a matter of keeping the bike upright and remaining up the pointy end of the pack to be able to make the finals.
With some really tough heat draws Izzak pushed himself to the limits and missed out on a place in the finals by a mere 1 point.
Unfortunately for our local boys you need a little luck on your side which was not so. Both Joe and Larz rode faultlessly in the first final but due to a fall in the second final for Joe, and Larz taking a tumble in the third, it ruled out any chance of the boys obtaining a podium finish.
Brayden managed to keep it together for the three finals and placed himself fifth overall.
Well done guys great effort.
The Cowra Motorcycle Racing Club would also like to wish all the boys who are travelling to Broadford this weekend to compete in the 2010 Victorian Championships the best of luck.
