Firstly let me start by thanking my trusted (or so I thought) understudy for last week’s insightful write up.
Unfortunately, it seems Col has his sights set on my job and is willing to do anything to sabotage my credibility.
He would have you believe that I am the Caster Semenya of the Cowra Triathlon Club with the controversy that ensued following the week one article.
But let me assure the loyal fans of this column that there’s no truth in that and the rumour circulating that the Chaser team is after my signature is way off target.
Anyway, I digress.
If the temperature is above 40 degrees this afternoon triathlon, unfortunately, won’t be on. If in doubt phone Jeremy after 3pm on 0427422671.
Black Friday’s racing last week could have easily been mistaken for a Wiggles concert as over 80 kids rocked up to splash, pedal and skip their way around the course in the Cowra Health Club Triathlon Series.
The star of the show was Captain “Cranky” Feathersword who controlled the transition area by pointing his fingers and doing the twist.
This week’s tip: It’s terrific to see so many people stepping up in distance and, as I get enough exercise just pushing my luck, I thought that I’d ask one of the resident PT’s (personal trainers if you’re not up on the lingo) about managing your time to enable more training to fit into your busy lives.
PT said that it wasn’t a problem: “Just get up earlier and go to bed later”. Sounds simple enough!

Highlights this week include the Kurtz combination of Abbey and Taniesha gaining their second PB in a row while Brian MacCabe and Matthew Dun achieved the same feat.
Emma Wilkinson has inherited the Road Runner’s legs as she charged around the 400m to slash her PB and Bailey Callaghan’s matchbox bike wheels were a blur as he flew to a second PB of the season.
The beginner girls cranked up the pace with Josie Date’s sprint finish spectacular.
Toby Apps smashed a further one minute from his PB the previous week.
The self titled “Good Samaritan” Haydn Thomas made his long awaited debut in the Beginners Course (looking somewhat like he’d just arrived in Lilliput) and was virtually carried to the finishing line by his entourage. He dismissed his “slowish” time saying it had something to do with helping a youngster untangle her shoelace from the bike chain.
The wiser onlookers know that he was simply using that time to regain his breath that had escaped him since the swim began and was probably part of a tactical race strategy (smart thinking Haydo).
The much anticipated unveiling of the “Aussie Cossie” (with calls like “I didn’t realise you can get them off Ebay”) had spectators aghast, not at the speed and precision of the man, but at the way he pushed a younger competitor who had the hide to sweep past him on the run like he was standing still (a little respect next time Llewellyn – slow down a bit to make him feel better about himself, then take off).
Rob “Sardine” Webster had the outboard going in the pool as he held down second place in the swim, wedged between two Fishers. There has been talk that his love affair with his mountain bike could be coming to an end, but he is reluctant to ditch the old girl just yet.
Ernie Porter ran like his budgie smugglers were on fire to clock approximately 3.50 for his 1km run.
Fresh from the jungles of Rwanda, Gorilla Monsoon (aptly named given there is usually a flood of hair in the pool following the swim) cruised around the course and continues to eat away his time but he fell just short of a PB (imagine what he could do if he shaved down for the occasion – he probably hasn’t got a spare week to prepare though).
Guy Geeves declared his intentions with a blistering time that slaughtered his last season PB by nearly two minutes (the naturally occurring swim cap is certainly making a difference).
The first round of applause this week goes to Bob Hilton who spent some time on Sunday to iron out a few of the technique flaws in the swim leg for struggling freestylers.
Those who attended came away feeling that they had learnt something and felt better in the water.
Daryl Coates went from definite shark bait to struggling swimmer in one lesson.
The next session will be this Sunday. Plans are at present to run the clinics for the next three Sundays starting at 10am for about an hour and a half.
The second round of applause goes to the regular riders who have invited others to join the peloton on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.
This selfless act where they are prepared to slow their normal cruising speed in order to assist other members of the club develop their endurance and skill is admirable. Well done boys.
On the subject of bikes, as the numbers each week continue to grow, so does the demand for pushies.
If you know of a bike that has sat idly for a period of time in a shed or someone is looking to sell one for a reasonable (that means very cheap) price, then the Cowra Triathlon Club could be interested.
You could bring it down on Friday evening or contact Jeremy at Mr Embroidery and ask him to check it out.
For those who have earned a PB award in the previous weeks, they will be handed out before you race tonight. Because everyone has been so impressive, presentations will begin at 5.50pm as there are multitudes to distribute.
No triathlon on November 27
Please note there will be no triathlon on Friday, November 27.
Thought for the week: In light of the unwarranted controversy last week: “It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others”.
Here’s hoping we don’t see any cats tonight.
Keep on Tri-ing.
Hugh Jarms.
