Among Australia's best

Cowra was one of two NSW clubs that dominated the 2009 Australian Junior Dirt Track Championships held at Canberra’s newly redeveloped Fairburn Park Dirt Track Complex last weekend.

One hundred and fifty-six competitors from all over Australia converged on the Fairburn complex to compete in the titles.

Eighteen Cowra MCRC riders overcome some very strong competition to take out eight podium spots.

Representing Cowra were Jack Gee, Patrick and Thomas Duggan, Brady Kurtz, Joe and Jack Dawes, Kye and Larz Burke, Isaak and Billy Dawes, Matthew Gilmore, Jack Gilbert, Ben and Zach Cook, Josh Dominello, Toby and Kelsey Pollard and Izaak Ticehurst.

Senator for Canberra in the Australian Parliament, Kate Lundy, opened the event on Saturday morning.

She advised the riders and their families from clubs all over Australia that Governments recognise the important role sport plays in kids lives and declared the Championships open.

The riders endured soaring temperatures on Saturday and Sunday reaching the high 30s.

Cowra’s Jack Dawes proved the heat wasn’t a hindrance defending his title which he won last year at the Championships held at the Central Coast in the 85cc 2 Stroke/150cc 4 Stroke 9-under 11 Years division.

Jack played it cool throughout the heats, but came out firing in the three finals blitzing all before him in all three.

Zach Cook, Joe Dawes, Patrick Duggan and Toby Pollard also competed in this class and are all improving with every meeting.

Jack Dawes put up a good fight in the 80cc 4 Stroke 8-under 11 Years taking the second podium spot after taking out two seconds and winning the last of the three finals.

Patrick Duggan, Joe Dawes and Matt Gilmore raced hard and fast, but were unable to make the top three in this class.

In the 65cc 7-under 9 Years class it was the classy Suzuki rider Matt Gilmore who took this section by surprise.

Matt finished second in the Championship when in the third and last final he stunned the crowd by passing the two most favoured riders, Mitchell Cluff from Kurri Kurri and the in-form Noah Stewart from Newcastle, in what was one the best races of the day.

Jack Gilbert also rode well in this class and has been riding well all year.

Josh Dominello, competing in his first Australian Titles, tried hard and enjoyed every minute of the weekend.

Thomas Duggan and Zach Cook took second and third podium spots in the 65cc 9-under 11 Years class.

Thomas has been in form of late and riding like a champion and Zach is gradually creeping up to the top podium spot.

Ben Cook rode like a true champion in the 85cc 2 Stroke/150cc 4 Stroke 11-under 13 Years class and looked to be the early favourite for the finals.

With some hard fought racing in the heat of the day, Ben was placed second in the Championship.

Unfortunately Ben was unable to compete in the 65cc 9-under 13 Class to defend his title win from last year due to mechanical problems.

Brady Kurtz has just stepped up with the big boys into the 13-under 16 Years division in the 85cc 2 Stroke/150cc 4 Stroke class.

The racing was fast and furious and Brady proved he was up to the task and finished second in the Championship behind 15-year-old Brisbane hotshot, Robbie Menzie Sargent.

Brady also made the big move up into the 250cc 4 Stroke 13-under 16 Years class where he held his own against the best junior riders in Australia and finished a creditable seventh after some big crashes in the three finals.

Larz Burke was right in the thick of things in the 250cc 4 Stroke Class on his new Suzuki until being involved in an accident in the third final which destroyed his chances of taking a podium spot, but he will be a real handful next season and should be on the podium in the near future.

Izaak Ticehurst had his first big meeting in the premier 250cc 4 Stroke class and proved he can mix it with the best of them. Izaak will be a force to be reckoned with next year.

Billy Dawes battled it out throughout the rounds in the 80cc 4 Stroke 11-under 14 Years and his efforts paid off with a third place podium spot. Billy had bad luck in his other class, the 85cc 2 Stroke/150cc 4 Stroke Big Wheels 11-under 13 Years class which left him short of points to make the finals.

Jack Gee, Kelsey Pollard and Isaak Dawes thrilled the crowd as usual in the 50cc Auto Demo class when the ACT club decided to put 20 riders on the track at the one time.
