Handicaps prove too much to run down in snooker finals

20 Nov, 2009 09:31 AM
Friday night snooker at the Cowra Services Club was doubles with 32 players making for a perfect draw.

Pros Soun and Richard Kelly were the first team to make the decider.

In round one they defeated Col Crowe and Alan Messiter 46-36 and then beat Bob Holdsworth and Val Norton 58-43.

To make the decider Pros and Richard were one point winners over Shane Lauritzen and David Ryan 39-38.

In the other half of the draw Jim Williams and Peter Verzi went into the decider untroubled with high scores.

In round one they defeated Paul Ryan and Jeff Pullen 61-28 and then John Kirk and Noel Mason 54-21.

Jim and Peter then knocked the favourites for the night out of the competition in the form of Geoff Core and Mark Rush to take their place in the decider.

The Pros Soun and Richard Kelly vs Jim Williams and Peter Verzi decider saw Pros playing in his third straight Friday night final and giving away a 13-point start on Friday the 13th.

Jim and Peter took full advantage of the start potting well and playing safe to go and record another high-scoring victory 64-43.

Congratulations Jim Williams and well played Pros Soun and Richard Kelly.

Sunday singles snooker saw 29 players enter the draw.

Dianne Spring, Alan Messiter and Noel Mason played well for two wins each.

Richard Kelly, after three very easy wins 52-12, 61-34 and 63-5, was then in turn demolished by Ray Salisbury 32-12 in the first semi-final.

Barry Archer and Bill Dawes played the second semi-final with Bill one of the most experienced players in the club and Barry one of the least experienced.

The score 80-36 in Bill’s favour only told part of the story. During the game Bill took time to show Barry some shots and angles, well done Bill. And well played Barry Archer on the three wins before running to Bill.

The decider saw both Ray Salisbury and Bill Dawes playing some of their best snooker on the day.

After receiving a 15-point start and then making a 15 break, Ray proved too hard to run down and went on to win the Sunday singles title 65-46.

Congratulations Ray Salisbury and well played Bill Dawes.

The weekend’s snooker was sponsored by Kev Moodie Couriers and the Cowra Services Club.

Closing date for the club’s Presentation Night dinner is December 6. For catering purposes, names must be on the list by the due date.

Friday night snooker this week is the President’s Trophy with play to start at 6pm.

Sunday morning snooker will also be on with names in by 11am, ready to play at 11.15am.

All new players welcome.
