History was created at Orange City Bowling Club on Thursday when Orange Newstead bowler Bernie Diduszko and Cowra’s Gerard Beath became the first pair in the 43-year history to win the Chris Gryllis Real Estate Golden Eagle Pairs Classic three times.
After winning in 2003 and 2005, the pair was made to work hard to achieve their historic milestone by Belrose’s Phil Westcott and Dick Love from Avoca Beach in the final.
In a game of cat and mouse, which had the 100 or so spectators glued to the edge of their seats, Diduszko and Beath won the 21-end final 24-20.
“It’s fantastic. You can’t get any better than that,” Diduszko said.
Beath said yesterday’s win was special.
“It’s awesome to win it once and get your name on the trophy but to back it up [after six years] and get the trifecta is certainly up there in my list of achievements,” Beath said.
Beath had reasons to say their third win was special as it was his third bowl during the 20th end that proved to be the difference.
Leading 19-17 but down a shot, the former Australian representative produced an incredible bowl that pushed his rivals bowls out of the way.
It gave him and Diduszko a fiveshot win and a 24-17 cushion going into the final end.
“That was the clincher,” Beath said.
It was a great comeback for the duo that had lost their opening game of the tournament on Monday morning.
“We knew with sectional play you could afford to lose one game but it then becomes cutthroat after that as you can’t afford to lose another.
“But we improved as the week went on.”
The four-shot loss was the only defeat Westcott and Love suffered during the
tournament.
It was the second time Westcott had fallen one win short of claiming the prestigious title.
He lost in 2006 but said he and his playing partner Love would be back for another crack.
“It was that one end that cost us ...maybe next year it will be our year,” Westcott said.
Diduszko and Beath weren’t originally going to team up together as Beath was considering sitting the tournament out.
But after weeks of having little luck finding another partner, Diduszko got his champion playing partner.
