He’s raced from Bunbury to Bankstown.
At Ballarat and Bulli.
But exciting three-year-old Lombo Broadband seems to have found a home at Doug Lee’s Noonbinna stables…with instant results.
Lombo Broadband scored his first career win – after 17 starts – with Lee in the gig at Dubbo’s non-TAB meeting on Saturday.
The Million To One (USA) x Kari Rose Lombo pacer has already raced at all corners of the continent, but according to Lee is more suited to the tighter Central West tracks.
Bred and owned by Mick Lombardo of Lombardo Standardbreds Pty Ltd, the largest owner in Australia, Lombo Broadband was having only his first start for Lee on the weekend after a troubled Gold Crown carnival campaign. He finished seventh in the second heat of the Bathurst Gold Chalice (2130 metres) a little over two weeks ago.
“Mick Lombardo came up to run him at the Bathurst Gold Crown carnival and he thought he would be better suited to the smaller tracks around here which proved to be right,” Lee said.
It is the second promising pacer Lee has taken on from Lombardo.
Among his nine in work is Lombo La Freebie, also sired by $150,000 career-earner Million To One (USA).
Lombo Broadband still has a way to go to scale those lofty heights with only $4,445 in prize money, but Lee said he will continue searching for suitable races for the colt.
“I think the closest he ran was a fourth at Ballarat and that was two starts ago (before he came to me).
“We’ll pick our races as we go.”
Punters seemed to be unsuspecting of Lombo Broadband’s untapped ability, friendless at $33.60 in the market for the Radio 2DU 3yo Pace (2120 metres) on Saturday.
He eventually won by a short half-head from Jimmyhanover ($4.80) while $2.60 favourite Jogalong Kimo was a little less than four metres away third.
Lee’s shrewd drive had Lombo Broadband three back on the pegs heading into the final 400 metres, before shifting four wide to flash down the straight and win.
“He drew nine and the one I followed, it didn’t go forward so I went straight across to the fence.
“I sat there until just inside the 400 and pushed out and got on their backs and come four wide on the last bend.”
n Meanwhile, heats of the Jack Honan Memorial will headline Cowra’s only harness racing meet of 2008 next Saturday, April 19.
Officials are anticipating a six-race card, but could accommodate seven depending on nominations.
