An entertaining scoreless draw with Indonesia was enough for Canowindra’s Rhyan Grant and his Young Socceroos to book their spot in next year’s Asian Football Confederation under 19s Championships.
The point earned from Saturday night’s clash in Bandung wrapped up a successful qualification process for Jan Versleijen’s side who had destroyed Singapore 8-0 only a couple of days earlier.
Sydney FC’s Grant was influential in that win scoring his first international goal as well as earning his side a penalty.
But it was the Indonesian clash which was pivotal with the Young Socceroos hitting the woodwork on a number of occasions, while also relying on custodian Mark Birighitti to make a number of important saves at the other end.
“Our aim coming here was to qualify for the AFC under 19s Championship and we have now achieved that aim,” Versleijen said.
“I am proud of all the team and the fantastic job they have done here in qualifying. This was the toughest game so far in the tournament and probably the highest quality game of the tournament.
“The Indonesian team were well organised, disciplined and played some very good football.
“Both teams had their chances and the draw was indicative of the game it was.”
The Young Socceroos and fellow Asian powerhouse Japan have both booked their spots at the tournament proper in 12 months time.
They clashed last night in the final game of the tournament.
The host nation for the AFC under 19s Championship will be determined later this month with China, Thailand and Indonesia all reportedly vying for the honour.
