WIRES flies to the rescue

06 Feb, 2012 08:17 AM
Woody the forest bat is under the care of WIRES’ local branch after being rescued from a water tank by a Woodstock resident.

WIRES Weddin-Lachlan secretary Mick Ansell has fed the Little Forest Bat crushed up fruit fly larvae and meal worms six times daily after Woodstock resident Frank Capes brought him to the group.

Mr Ansell said the bat can eat half its weight in food each day, and in the wild feeds on insects including mosquitos, keeping their populations down.

Up to 70 can be found in a single colony of the species, which are nocturnal and common to the Cowra shire, he said.

Little Forest Bats can be found in hollows of old trees, buildings, and timber stacks, and are agile fliers.

Mr Ansell said he would release the bat into his natural habitat after he puts his normal weight back on.

As a WIRES member and trained volunteer - it is very exciting and pleasing to read about this successful rescue! Well done to everyone involved.
