Lamb price records tumbled for the second time in just three months at the Cowra saleyards last Friday, after a pen of extra heavy weight lambs produced by Robert Trengove, “Greenbank”, sold for $165 per head.
The price was up on the previous saleyard record of $161.60 a head, paid only earlier this year in January for a pen also produced by Mr Trengove.
Norman C Bellamy and Co sold the lambs this time too, with the first pen of 45 selling for $165 a head and a second pen of 53 selling for $158 a head.
Matt Bargwanna of Norman C Bellamy and Co said the record price is reflective of the market and supply and demand will dictate future lamb prices.
The new record comes after lamb prices have continued to soar around Australia with the nation’s sheep flock dwindling to 76.9 million, the lowest since 1916.
Demand from buyers and consumers, however, remains strong.
