Rebates help people warm to solar power

16/11/2007 6:46:44 AM
Environmental concerns and higher government rebates are pushing more people towards solar energy, according to Central West Solar owner Robert Biviano.

Mr Biviano installed a $40,000 solar panel system at a Cowra property this week which consisted of 20 photovoltaic panels.

The system feeds energy back into the power grid, where it is purchased by Country Energy.

While financial savings were a factor, Mr Biviano said people were also focusing on environmental gains.

"People who are doing this want to reduce greenhouse gases and make a difference one house at a time," he said.

Mr Biviano said the minimum system that could be installed was six panels, costing about $14,000.

Rebates up to $8000 to assist with installation have increased the popularity of solar energy.

"The rebate was $4000 and then it was doubled in the last budget - when that happened the phone started ringing," he said.

Country Energy Cowra team leader Craig Pierce was on site during the installation.

He installed an import export meter to measure the amount of power being used from the grid and the amount of power being supplied back into the grid by the solar panels.
