The irrigation may be drying up at the Cowra Golf Club, but the business is not.
Current club president Rob Waddell, on the eve of winding up his year of duty, sent the message loud and clear to the community, disappointed at rumours circulating the club is not financial.
He admitted the idea was not completely baseless, with the club facing an uncertain future a few years ago, but stressed it was a very different picture now.
“The club is alive and healthy, we have had a profitable year, and our cash reserves are very strong,” Mr Waddell said.
“We own and control assets in the vicinity of $2 million and there is no debt to speak of. It’s a position a lot of businesses would like to be in.
“Certainly, we have had a few problems with lack of water but that’s affecting everyone.”
Mr Waddell said the club had negotiated a major turn around in the past few years, led by good management, with a stand out feature being the impact of the successful restaurant and catering aspect of the club.
Management has even managed to afford the expense of several machinery upgrades during the past financial year.
It’s a positive picture he wanted to stress to the wider community is the reality of the club, not old rumours it is about to go bust.
The Golf Club’s wavering fortunes are not alone. Many clubs across the country have been struggling with falling members numbers and rising costs.
Security costs for the Cowra club were a major issue in recent years, however, Mr Waddell said these issues have since dramatically improved.
Mr Waddell said one aspect the club had been working on was its social membership, which naturally linked with the club’s increasing focus on its popular dining room – sometimes attracting up to 100 diners on the Friday night.
Mr Waddell admitted he would love to see more members, however, but any concern over their numbers was certainly not enough to justify any rumours regarding the club’s future.
“This is not only a highly viable business, it a valuable part of the community and it will be around for a long time yet, well past my time as president” Mr Waddell said.
