Inaccuracies in a letter on Cowra police numbers from NSW Police Minister David Campbell need to be addressed, Cowra Shire Council was told on Monday evening.
Cr Ian Brown told the council meeting mention of two lock up keepers living next door to the station was among one of the matters mentioned in the letter which needed to be addressed.
“We were also told to discuss the matter with the officer in charge, who is on leave,” Cr Brown said.
The council, since receiving the letter, has requested a meeting with the assistance police commissioner Stephen Bradshaw.
“If we can’t get a 24 hour station in Cowra we at least need the police numbers up to what they should be in the day time,” Cr Brown said.
Cowra mayor Bruce Miller believes Cowra having adequate officer to cover shifts at the station now is more important an issue than a 24 hour station.
“I have real concerns about the level of morale at the police station at the moment and the lack of support officers receive from the Local Area Command,” Cr Miller said.
“There is little doubt the Cowra station in undermanned which is placing extra stress on officers already working in a stressful profession.”
Cr Miller said it was his understanding that last weekend, a long weekend, was the first time in over 20 years that no Cowra highway patrol car operated on Cowra roads, providing further evidence that the station was undermanned.
