Horticulture students on a mission to grow

27 Aug, 2010 10:59 AM
Centacare LETS Employment in association with Dubbo TAFE has began an indigenous-only Certificate II in Agriculture course which teaches students landscaping, gardening and horticulture techniques.

Local indigenous horticulture students enrolled in the course are putting newly learnt skills to good use by building a community garden at the Erambie Mission.

The three day a week course began on August 16 and is expected to conclude at the end of the year.

LETS Employment team leader Jacinta Hines said so far more than 10 participants have already signed up for the course.

“The course gives participants a fantastic opportunity to learn about landscaping and horticulture and will allow them to [enhance the appearance] of the mission,” Ms Hines said.

“The students are making a community garden and will be growing produce. It is fantastic and we are

really excited about it.

“The [participants] are enjoying it so far - they are having a ball,” she said.

“If we get a good response we hope to run the course regularly.

“Any indigenous people who would like to come on board are very welcome.”
