Group Three of the Cowra Entrepreneur Program (CEP) commenced recently, with twenty local tourism and hospitality operators attending a business boot camp session at the Cowra Japanese Garden.
It is pleasing to see such a positive ongoing response to the CEP, which provides free training opportunities to strengthen the local business community.
This results in expansion of existing Cowra businesses, ultimately strengthening our economy.
I encourage any business owners or managers interested in the CEP to contact Mike Foster on 6340 2038 to discuss opportunities to get involved.
I was glad to welcome NSW Opposition Leader Barry O’Farrell to Cowra in mid-February.
I was fortunate to have the opportunity to meet with Mr O’Farrell over lunch and discuss some of the key issues facing our community.
It is always pleasing to see leaders of political parties visit our community, and this was no exception. I would also like to acknowledge the local member, Katrina Hodgkinson for her involvement in Mr O’Farrell’s visit.
Over the weekend I attended a fundraising dinner for Youth Off the Streets, an inspiring organisation.
We should have a great deal of respect for Chris Riley, and people like him, who so generously give of their time and efforts.
Our community is enriched by individuals and groups such as these and we need to acknowledge the wonderful work that they do without personal or material gain.
I would also like to acknowledge the great effort of the local community in raising over $9000 for this cause.
The quarterly Centroc Board meeting was held last week and as always, it was positive to meet with other Mayors and General Managers about important regional issues from healthcare to education, telecommunications to tourism and cost saving innovation. Such issues discussed at Centroc frequently have great bearing on the Cowra region and it is beneficial for us to be represented in this regional forum.
Looking ahead now, most in the community would be aware that Cowra Council is hosting the Local Government and Shires Associations’ annual Tourism Conference from next Wednesday to Friday.
This is a state-wide conference and it is a great credit to Cowra that we were able to secure hosting rights for this event.
It also is the first event of this magnitude to be held in the recently refurbished Cowra Civic Centre.
I would like to encourage the community to be aware of the influx of visitors to our town next week.
Please help us showcase our community and give the delegates a favourable and lasting impression of Cowra.
Let’s make sure that they leave next Friday thinking what a wonderful community we have and resolving to bring their family and friends back to visit.
Progress is continuing on the rail feasibility study commissioned by the councils of Blayney, Cowra, Harden, Young and Weddin.
Completed in December 2009, the study examined the viability of the rail line from Blayney to Harden, via Cowra.
The Mayors and General Managers of the five councils had a successful meeting with the Minister for Transport, the Hon David Campbell on this issue last Wednesday and have another meeting scheduled with him for 25 March to further discuss the report.
Hopefully we’ll have more positive outcomes to report after this meeting.
It was a pleasure to host the public launch of the document in Cowra on Friday.
I look forward to reporting more positive news on this issue in the future.
Bill West
