A larger than life personality in the region’s clergy, Monsignor John Grannall MBE, died at his home at Portland on Monday, December 29.
Monsignor Grannall, affectionately known far and wide as ‘Grassy’, had been the Parish Priest at Cowra.
He was 77 years of age and had been in failing health for some time.
Born and raised in Canowindra he was educated at St Columbas College at Springwood before training for the Priesthood at St Patrick’s at Manly.
His ordination took place at his home town of Canowindra in 1955.
As a young Priest he joined the RAAF as a chaplain in 1965, continuing in the Air Force until 1976.
During this time he served at Vung Tau during the Vietnam War and was also based in Darwin at the time of Cyclone Tracey.
His service in Vung Tau led to him being awarded the MBE in 1971.
Back in civilian life he served as a Priest in the Dubbo, Cowra, Lithgow and Bathurst parishes before his final appointment to Portland in January 1991.
A popular figure in sporting circles, Monsignor Grannall was an enthusiastic supporter of the Portland Colts Rugby League club.
He is survived by a sister, Lola Proctor. Three other sisters predeceased him.
Monsignor Grannall’s Requiem Mass took place at the Sacred Heart Church, Wallerawang on Tuesday, December 6 followed by burial in Pipers Flat Cemetery.
