Businesses take advantage of Industrial Relations help

5/05/2008 8:41:07 AM
Businesspeople wanting to stay on top of the minefield of industrial relations heard what the future is likely to bring at a special seminar organised by the Central West Business Chamber.

John Stanton, special counsel from Australian Business Lawyers, addressed the group, which included representatives from a variety of local businesses and services, including real estate, food processing, hospitality, retail and trades.

Mr Stanton explained to the crowd of 20 plus people last week that the Federal Government has a clear mandate to make significant changes to the Industrial Relations systems, which will impact on all businesses in Australia.

He gave them the likely content of the new laws regarding agreement making, unfair dismissals and minimum conditions and the changes he expects to see.

The legal expert said many small business owners and operators were unsure of how the changes would affect their business, and said they should seek advice.

“There is a lot of uncertainty out there and exactly what legislation applies to what business,” Mr Stanton said.

“This information hopefully will help people start on the right track of checking exactly what affect these changes will have on their business.”

Mr Stanton gave those attending his recommendations on the steps businesses can take to prepare for the changes and to secure current workplace arrangements.
