Safety first for Cowra crews
02 Aug 10 | Country Energy crews have undertaken compulsory Regulatory Assessment Training in Cowra as part of the company’s annual training program. The training, conducted by Country Energy trainers and assessors, included a theory component covering the understanding of the Electrical Safety Rules, and physical assessments on essential safety operations such as pole top rescues, escape and rescue from an elevated work platform (EWP) and pre- climb inspections of poles.
A sobering task
02 Aug 10 | Over 800 people descended upon the Showground pavilion on Saturday night for the Cowra Wine Show public tasting, putting their judging skills to the test. Newly awarded gold, silver and bronze medal wines were on offer, pitting public opinion against top judges who were charged with the task of finding the best of over 2100 wines.

30 Jul 10 | Federal member for Hume Alby Shultz was in Cowra on Tuesday where he rolled up his sleeves to work at Kendal Street Newsagency. He joined over 80 other members of parliament participating in the week long annual program “Pollies for Small Business” which is an initiative of the NSW Business Chamber.
Country Energy begins $319,000 power upgrade
30 Jul 10 | Country Energy has commenced work on a $319,000 power upgrade that will strengthen the electricity supply to Cowra well into the future, catering for future growth. The significant upgrade is taking place in Elouera Road, an area earmarked for future development, and will see local crews replacing powerlines in the area with increased capacity wire and installing a new piece of protection equipment.
Cowra's opera extravaganza
30 Jul 10 | Cowra is set to host Australia’s finest opera acts on Tuesday August 10 when Opera Australia’s Oz Opera performs La traviata. Oz Opera’s La traviata is presented by Cowra Arts Council and will be hosted at the Cowra High School hall. One of the world’s most-loved operas, Verdi’s La traviata (“the fallen woman”), is the story of the courtesan Violetta, who attempts to escape the gilded cage of her life with her young lover, Alfredo.
Line up for a taste
30 Jul 10 | The top drops of the Cowra Wine Show were put to the test yesterday morning with medals and trophies up for grabs during final judging. Judging began on Monday, with over 2100 different wines being put to the test. Each entrant in the show provides from four to six bottles for judging.

It’s the annual police charity golf day and this year it will benefit the Cowra PCYC and the committee’s hope to open its second building on the Young Rd.
Driver's lucky escape
30 Jul 10 | A Canberra man was lucky to escape without serious injury after the B-Double truck he was driving along the Boorowa Rd overturned at 6.15am on Wednesday morning. The 42 year old man lost control of the vehicle 2km south out of town and ran off the road, before the entire truck overturned and spilled out over both lanes of the road.

28 Jul 10 | Cowra View Club celebrated its 38th birthday on Friday June 25, 2010 with about 70 members and guests in attendance. President Muriel Yell welcomed Zone Councillor Cynthia Guyunette and members of Harden Evening, Temora and West Wyalong View Clubs who had travelled over to join us for the occasion.
Community projects unveiled
28 Jul 10 | Community representatives from 17 different projects across Cabonne Shire attended an official opening ceremony last week at Canowindra. Although the bulk of the projects are already complete, the shire hosted an official opening ceremony in Memorial Park Canowindra yesterday, with special guest Labor Senator Steve Hutchins performing the honours.
Judging chairman overseeing his final Cowra Wine Show
28 Jul 10 | Eight years after beginning judging at the Cowra Wine Show, Andrew Spinaze has decided that this will be the last time. Mr Spinaze, from Tyrell’s Wine in the Hunter Valley, has worked his way up from a junior judge in 2002 to the wine show Chairman position he holds today.
Local branches attend CWA church service
28 Jul 10 | Members from Canimbla, Cowra and Cowra Evening CWA represented their branches at St John’s Anglican Church in Cowra for the annual CWA Sunday on July 18.
Avenue continues to grow
28 Jul 10 | The latest planting on Sakura Avenue of its famous Cherry trees is the direct result of the contribution from more than 1,000 Japanese visitors. This week, another young tree joined the rows that line the avenue between the Cowra PoW camp, the Japanese Garden and the Australian and Japanese War Cemeteries; the 16th to be sponsored by tour company IEC Oceania.
Forensic experts work on identifying remains
28 Jul 10 | More details have emerged surrounding Sunday’s finding of human remains near Koorawatha. Two walkers discovered the remains in a dry creek bed on Sunday morning, as they walked near Pipe Clay Road, 30km south-west of Cowra.
Schultz revisits his working roots
26 Jul 10 | In Cowra on Tuesday, Federal Member for Hume, Alby Schultz, revisited his working roots at the Cowra Abattoirs. “On Tuesday I visited the Cowra Abattoirs and met with Owner Manager, Mr Chris Cummins and Manager, Mr Peter Browne, to discuss the relevant issues directly affecting them and the meat processing industry in the region.” Mr Schultz said.
Plans in place for anniversary
26 Jul 10 | Thursday August 5, marks the 66th Anniversary of the Cowra Prisoners of War Breakout and a full program of events is planned to commemorate this historic event. On 5 August 1944, 1104 Japanese prisoner of war staged a mass escape attempt from the Cowra Prisoner of War Camp.

Then this may be your only chance (see photo) because local residents Belinda Green and Steve Mason’s brown hen has produced a mammoth double yolker that is more than 20 percent heavier than the last apparent record holding egg The Guardian reported on which weighed 117 grams.
New faces helped out at Kidz Care vacation program
26 Jul 10 | Two new faces joined Cowra PCYC’s Kidz Care vacation program during the last school holidays. Amy O’Reilly and Meg Dobson, both teachers at St Raphaels, together with Penny Willoughby and Kristy Dunlop supervised the children at the facility during the holidays.
26 Jul 10 | Police officers from Young and Cootamundra were investigating a site near Koorawatha late yesterday afternoon and evening as the Cowra Guardian went to print.
